NEW ORLEANS - The New Orleans Saints have placed their franchise tag on Jimmy Graham in order to protect the clubs rights to its star tight end through next season. The move means Graham, barring a holdout, will almost certainly play for New Orleans next season for no less than the tight end franchise tag of $7.04 million. It is also possible, under the NFLs collective bargaining agreement, that Graham could be tagged as a receiver because of how often he lined up split wide from the line. That would carry a tag of $12.3 million. However, since the Saints only placed the non-exclusive franchise tag on Graham, according to a report from ESPN, teams can still try to sign the star but the Saints would be able to match any offer or be compensated with two first-round draft picks from the signing team. Once Grahams tag has been determined, the two sides could continue to argue that matter before an arbitrator. That appears to be the likely process as both side aim to determine precisely how much negotiating leverage they have before hammering out a long-term deal. Similarly, the Saints use their franchise tag on quarterback Drew Brees in March 2012, then needed a little more than four months to work out the five-year, $100 million deal Brees signed shortly before training camp. Like Brees, Graham is represented by Creative Artists Agency. They do not have the same agent. Graham is represented by Jimmy Sexton and Brees by Tom Condon. The move, confirmed by team spokesman Greg Bensel, was expected as part of what is widely anticipated to be a protracted negotiation between the team and one of the best young tight ends in the NFL Graham has said publicly during the Pro Bowl in February that it would be "unfortunate," if the team used the franchise tag on him, but on Friday he reacted to the move with subtle humour. Afterward, Graham wrote on his Twitter account, "Confirming its officially Franchisefriday... TAG ... I guess Im it." Graham, a former college basketball who played one year of football at Miami, was drafted by the Saints in 2010. Last season, he led the Saints in catches with 86, yards with 1,215 and touchdowns with 16. He has led the Saints in catches in each of the past three seasons, while leading the club in yards receiving and touchdowns in two of the last three seasons. During the past three regular seasons combined, he has 270 catches for 3,507 yards and 36 touchdowns.
. He made another correct read. The Browns, who have been shuttling quarterbacks on and off the field all season, finally got some good news on that front: Campbells ribs are only bruised.

. Rooneys latest piece of football genius lost in the furore which now stalks David Moyes, and the man who gave the Manchester United striker his start as a 16-year old at Goodison Park back in 2002.

. -- When the Los Angeles Kings are on top of their formidable defensive game, they revel in the silence they can create in a frustrated road arena.( - The Edmonton Oilers avoided tying the franchises longest home losing streak the last time out. Dallas Eakins team now takes aim at its first road win in a month when the Oilers visit San Jose on Tuesday for the finale of a home-and-home series. Edmonton halted several skids in Saturdays 2-1 triumph over the visiting Sharks. The Oilers snapped an 11-game overall slide with the close win and also ended an 0-7-1 slide as the host. Edmonton picked up its first home victory since beating Montreal on Oct. 27 and avoided matching a club-record nine-game home skid set from Oct. 16-Nov. 24, 1993. The Oilers stopped their overall 0-7-4 skid two losses shy of tying the clubs 13-game losing streak, which was set from Dec. 31, 2009-Jan. 30, 2010. The recent win over the Sharks also marked Edmontons first victory of the season against a Western Conference opponent. The Oilers are now 1-12-4 within the conference. The Oilers havent won on the road since beating the New York Rangers on Nov. 9. Edmonton has lost five straight as the guest since that positive decision in the Big Apple, falling to 2-6-4 on the road this season. That win over the Rangers was Edmontons last before ending its lengthy slide against the Sharks. Edmonton beat the Sharks for just the second time in 10 meetings on Saturday, as David Perron scored the deciding goal in the third period of the 2-1 win at Rexall Place. Perron beat Alex Stalock with a wrist shot from the right circle to give Edmonton a 2-1 edge with 9:34 remaining in regulation. The shot deflected off San Jose defenseman Brenden Dillon and into the nnet for Perrons fourth goal of the season.dddddddddddd Nail Yakupov also tallied a power-play goal in the second period for the Oilers and Ben Scrivens turned aside 20-of-21 shots for the win. This doesnt mean a lot if were not going to stick to it, said Scrivens. We have to replicate that kind of effort night after night. Scrivens could get the call again tonight after beating the Sharks for the first time in his career. He is 1-2-1 with a 2.96 goals against average in four lifetime appearances against San Jose. After completing this set against the Sharks, Edmonton will begin another home-and-home series tomorrow night when it visits Anaheim. The Ducks and Oilers will then meet at Rexall Place on Friday. Tye McGinn provided San Joses lone goal on Saturday, as the Sharks had a four-game winning streak snapped. Patrick Marleau assisted on the goal to extend his point streak to five games. Stalock made 22 saves in the loss. It was his first outing since suffering a knee injury on Nov. 8 He was sharp, he made some real good saves in the first period when we needed him, Sharks coach Todd McLellan said of Stalock. He gave us a chance to get to the [intermission] and regroup. He looked comfortable and didnt fatigue at all. There were a lot of positives in his game. Antti Niemi is expected to be back between the pipes for the Sharks tonight. He is 9-1-1 with a 2.40 GAA in 11 lifetime games against the Oilers. San Jose is 7-4-2 as the host this season and is beginning a five-game homestand tonight. Edmonton has lost three straight and eight of its last 10 at the Shark Tank. ' ' '
